We surround the game with pomp, muscles, speed and appetite… a sport so rough, yet fragile that they play in sub-zero temperatures while snow piles in the bleachers. The gridiron brings tears and glory, a combination so sweet the Sports Gods cringe when they watch the competition and a receiver gets cracked across the middle. “The quarterback definitely left him out to dry there,” The commentator would say; while the game’s P.A. is silent and awe-struck from the hit at midfield… .{{more}} The fans scream with delight and terror at the same time, while the field judge and his un-fazed crew move the chains… The kid limps off the field with the help of a heavy entourage of athletic trainers, and the coach pats him on the back while he sputters to the bench to receive further attention from the school’s sports medicine staff. His season could very well be over, but he’s not whining or blaming the other team’s secondary for attacking him when he intruded their backfield alone. The score was 35-0 at the end of the first quarter. The first-team offense played 21 snaps before they were summoned to rest the remaining 30-plus minutes of the massac—- Pardon me again… But seriously… THIS IS A GAME. And the ‘Bullying Stigma’ has suddenly transcended from the tender hallways of the elementary and middle schools to the precious turf of perhaps high-school athletes’ greatest virtue: Football… where emotions will harbor in the locker room only to later be delegated on the grass, where the eccentric pigskin savages and heirlooms alike cascade in parking lots with the many captivated fans and alumni of yore waiting to watch with starry eyes the team they branded their epidermal layer for… And the burgers lack seasoning but still make meals for the kids when it’s all over -regardless of the score-… Besides… THIS IS A GAME “Man bro that dude hit you hard…. You okay….? Sorry I left you out to dry out there, ‘bro’: I didn’t see the middle-linebacker shooting the gap”, The quarterback says to his injured wide-receiver on the sideline after the play, “I’ll be okay man . . .” the injured player says, smiling: “This is a Game”…..
