The Last Days Warnings

1John 2:18-2718”Dear children, this is the last hour;and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichristshave come. This is how we know it is the last hour.19They went out fromus, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, theywould have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belongedto us.”20”But you have ananointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.[a]21I do not write to youbecause you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because nolie comes from the truth.22Who is the liar? Itis the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist thatdenies the Father and the Son.23No one who denies theSon has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.”{{more}}24”See that what youhave heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remainin the Son and in the Father.25And this is what hepromised us even eternal life.”26”I am writing thesethings to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.27As for you, theanointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone toteach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as thatanointing is real, not counterfeit just as it has taught you, remain in him.”Wehave come to a time when some people who dare to uphold the Bible and live bythe word of God are being ridiculed and ostracized. We have more crime, moregreed, more corruption, more immorality, and more illegitimate parents. Withunprecedented educational opportunities in this country, the situation wasgetting worse. The movie world seems to be obsessedwith the end of the world. There has been a steady stream of films coming outof Hollywood around the theme of end time events and takeoffs on the book ofRevelation. Films like “End of Days,” “Armageddon,” “Deep Impact,” and“Independence Day” are just some examples. However, Hollywood is not the onlysegment of our society that is obsessed with the End Times and the Antichrist.Books, Media, Magazines and even the Church. What all of these people do notrealize is how they will know the antichrist, and in fact, many antichrists arealready here. There are many antichrists and we protect ourselves from them byholding to the teachings of Scripture.First, you must realize is that “The Antichrist” is coming, but manyantichrists are already here. The first thing that John tells us is “Little children, it is the lasthour.”We see John’s care and concern for the church in referring to us as hischildren, and as a loving parent he wants to warn us about what is coming. Thefirst warning that he gives us is that it is the “last hour.” Now wesee the term last days often in the New Testament, but this is the only placein the New Testament that the term “last hour” appears. What exactlydid John mean? In his framework, the last times formed a last hour in which thestruggle with evil and the unveiling of God’s power would intensify. As we seethe events of human history unfold, we can see that we are living in that lasthour, and we must be watching and waiting for Christ’s return. He also remindsus that “as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming.” The wordis a combination of two Greek words. Anti, meaning “the opposite or opposedto,” and Christos meaning “anointed one.” It refers to “onewho is opposed to Christ, in the sense of usurping the role of Christ. There are tremendous differences betweenChrist and antichrist. Christ came from above. Antichrist will ascend from thepit. Christ came in His Father’s name. The Antichrist will come in his ownname. Christ humbled Himself. The Antichrist will exalt himself. Christ wasdespised. The Antichrist will be admired. Christ will be exalted. The Antichristwill be cast down to hell Christ came to do His Father’s Will. The Antichristwill do his own Will. Christ came to save. The Antichrist will come to destroy.Christ is the Good Shepherd. The Antichrist is the evil shepherd. Christ is the“truth.” The Antichrist is the “lie.” Christ is the “Holy One”. The Antichristis the “lawless one.” John tells us that the antichrist is coming, but”even now many antichrists have come.” From the earliest days of thechurch in and around Ephesus, false teachers had been a problem. When Paul bidhis final farewell to the elders of the Ephesians church, he warned, in Acts20:29; it says, “I know full well that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in among you.” These are merely precursors to the oneAntichrist. Throughout history there have been individuals who epitomized eviland who were hostileto everything for which Christ stands. These antichrists have lived in everygeneration and will continue to work their evil. There are many cult leaderstoday who, through their teachings, draw people away from true faith. Some aremore notorious like Jim Jones and David Koresh, but still others are moresubtle. John tells us that “by which we know that it is the lasthour.” How do we know that it is the last time, that the world is about toend and Jesus Christ is about to return? Because there are many antichristsnow, many who oppose and stand against Christ. The antichrist has hisforerunners just as Jesus Christ had His prophets as forerunners. Therefore, you must be on your guard and you must look out for those who are opposed tothe truth of the gospel. What John says in the next verse should both shock and sadden us. He says”They went out from us, but they were not of us.” These antichristscame from within their own ranks. These are men and women who once lived as apart of John’s community, but have now departed. And no doubt, since hementioned antichrists in the previous verse, John views these people and theirteachers and leaders as bearing the spirit of antichrist. These false teachers, these antichrists, were not total strangers to the churches; they had been partof the church community, in fellowship with John and the other believers. Thenthese people left the churches and evidently became promoters of falseteachings about Jesus. Amen!Johnsaid that the proof they were not true Christians was “for if they hadbeen of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that theymight be made manifest, that none of them were of us.” All who attend churchmay not be true believers. The true believers may not now be able to discernthe false believers, but they may in time. It may happen when some leave thechurches and the teachings of Christ, proving that they never belonged. Or itmay not happen until the Day of Judgment when Christ will separate his truefollowers from those who never belonged. Amen!At that time He will separate the sheep from the goats. Transition: The next thingthat John wants us to know is How Do We Recognize Them ? He Who DeniesThat Jesus Is the ChristJohnassures us that true believers are not like these antichrists when he says”But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know allthings.” The KJV uses the word “unction” which means”anointing.” The word being translated comes from the word charismawhose root word means “to anoint.” In the Old Testament onlyprophets, priests, and kings were anointed. They were anointed by pouring oilupon their heads. The oil symbolized the Spirit of God coming upon them forservice. It is the same word that Paul uses in 1st Corinthians 12-14 forspiritual gifts. John is telling us that we are not like the antichrists; whohave the spirit of antichrist, but we have instead the spirit of Christ livingin us.2nd Corinthians1:21-22 says, “Now He who establishes us with you inChrist and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us theSpirit in our hearts as a guarantee.” Amen! John tells us “I have notwritten to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, andthat no lie is of the truth.” Amen!Thosewith the Holy Spirit not only know the truth about the Father and theSon but can also detect the difference between truth and falsehood. John wrote, not giving them further teaching; the false teachers were attempting to dothat. Instead, he was reaffirming the truth that had already been taught to themand that they had believed. Then John makes it clear how we will know theseantichrists when he says “Who is a liar, but he who denies that Jesus isthe Christ? He is the antichrist who denies the Father and the Son. Whoeverdenies the Son does not have the Father either; he who acknowledges the Son hasthe Father also.” Amen! Thegreat truth is that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, who came in the fleshto die for sin. To deny this amounts to blatant heresy. John battled this as the central focusof the false teaching. This is how we know who the antichrists are. They arethose who deny Jesus Christ is the Son of God, Savior of the world. In John14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No onecomes to the Father except through Me. There is only one name given by which wemust be saved and that name is Jesus Christ. Anyone who denies this believes alie and they are controlled by the spirit of antichrist. Policein Radnor, Pa., interrogated a suspect by placing a metal Colander on his headand connecting it with wires to a photocopy machine. The Message “He’slying” was placed in the copier, and police pressed the copy Button eachtime they thought the suspect wasn’t telling the truth. Believing the “liedetector” was working, the suspect confessed. The spirit of antichrist isalive and well in America today. Recently it was brought to my attention thatthe discovery channel was airing a documentary that strikes at the heart of thegospel. The documentary claims that the tombs of Jesus, Mary, Mary Magdaleneand a supposed son of Jesus Judah have been found, thus making the Bible andtwo thousand years of history a lie. According to the Discovery Channel’sdocumentary “The Lost Tomb of Jesus”, the bones of Jesus buried withHis family have been found. In addition, the documentary says that MaryMagdalene and Jesus might have had a son named Judah. Here is what TheDiscovery Channel says about the program and the Christian faith: “All leadingepigraphers agree about the inscriptions. All archaeologists confirm the natureof the find. It comes down to a matter of statistics. A statistical studycommissioned by the broadcasters concludes that the probability factor is 600 to 1 in favor of this tomb beingthe tomb of Jesus of Nazareth and his family.” Having watched howHollywood portrays Christians and Christian values for the past 30 years, it isclear that Hollywood considers Christianity its greatest enemy. This follows inthe footsteps of movies like the Da Vinci Code which seeks to show that Christianityis a lie. Can you tell me why Hollywood finds it necessary to attackChristianity but never Islam, Buddhism, or Hinduism? I believe that it is thespirit of antichrist! They are opposed to Christ and His church because theycannot accept the teachings of Jesus. They have joined Satan and the antichristin open rebellion against the Holy Son of God. However, this is nothing new. Those controlled by the spirit of antichrist have attempted to disprove thegospel since the days of the early church.  Butthe gospel has not lost its power. The name of Jesus has not lost its power. The blood of Jesus has not lost its power. I’ve read the book, and it says inthe end we win!!HowCan We Protect Ourselves Against Antichrists ? Which You Heard From theBeginning. John tells us that they way we protect ourselves from theantichrists is to “let that abide in you which you heard from thebeginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also willabide in the Son and in the Father.” “From the beginning” refersto what they had been taught from the early days of their Christian lives. Ephesians4:14 says; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carriedabout with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftinessof deceitful plotting. We do not need to chase after the latest “newrevelation” that comes down the pike. We do not need to seek some newrevelation that only a select few know about. We need to stick to the teachingsof Scripture, taught by Christ and passed down by the apostles. The use of theword, unique to John, “abide,” gives weight to the warning. The Wordof the gospel must not only be heard, but it must be given a vital place inone’s life. “It is not enough merely to have heard it and assented to themessage in time past. The message must continue to be present and active in thelives of those who have heard it. They must continually call it to mind and letit affect their lives. “If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper, but if we and our posterityignore its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophemay overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity.” John alsosays that if we continue to abide in the truth we will receive “thepromise that He has promised us eternal life.” By clinging to the truthabout God the Father and Christ his Son, believers can be sure they will neverbe separated from fellowship with God. That fellowship will literally continueforever, for Jesus promised that his followers would be given eternal life. Theother thing that John tells us will protect us from antichrists is discernment. He says “But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you,and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teachesyou concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taughtyou, you will abide in Him.” Again he is referring to the anointing thatcomes from the Holy Spirit. The true believers had received the Holy Spirit andhe lived within them. This means that believers can place their total trust inhim, rely on him for guidance and strength, and live as he directs. It impliesa personal, life-giving relationship. You do not need anyone to teach you meansthat Christians can tell the lying antichrists, “We do not need anotherteacher because the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, teaches us, so we willcontinue in what he has taught us, and continue to live in Christ.” Thisdoes not mean that Christians should turn away from the counsel of faithfulministers and attempt to make it on their own; in fact, that often will leadthem astray. Instead, it means that Christians can discern truth and rejectfalsehood. The better believers know the truth, the more easily they will be able toidentify a lie.We can trust the Holy Spirit that lives inside of us when it comes to discerningfalse teachers. If the Holy Spirit inside of us is at peace about it, we willbe at peace. If the Holy Spirit rejects it, we will know and be able to rejectit. Abide in the word; trust the discernment of the Holy Spirit and antichristswill not lead us astray. There is coming an antichrist. He will be the exact opposite of Christ. Hewill be against all that stands for Christ. There are many antichrists today. They oppose the truth of the gospel. They claim that Jesus is not the Christ. We can protect ourselves against them by: Abiding in the word and trusting thediscernment of the Holy Spirit. Let us stand firm in the truth and not be takenin by the spirit of antichrist. Now you know the truth about the warnings ofthe last day. Amen!
