The Christian Service Center has outgrown its current location at the 900 block of Mesquite Street and have been working on moving into a bigger facility.Director of Christian Service Center, Jim Clark, says, “We planned a facility of 20,000 square feet.”After considering different options, the center strongly considered the vacant lot of 2121 North 6th Street, where the 2121 apartments burned down eight years ago.Clark says, “It seemed ideal as far as the location and also for our building.”{{more}}Neighbors however, disagree.Amanda Early, who lives directly across the street from the 2121 lot says, “As a resident I’m concerned with what kind of people that’s going to bring into our neighborhood.”After hearing the concern of the future neighbors, Clark says, “The neighbors of the 2121 lot have nothing to worry about. We really don’t think we are going to attract a lot of crime. The people will drive in or get a ride, get their goods, and leave.”In fact, Clark thinks the new addition will be a positive one. He says, I think it will be a blessing to the neighborhood, I don’t think it will be a problem for the neighborhood.”Early did not want to jump to conclusions, so she made it a point to visit the neighborhood where the center is currently.”Tell you the truth, it was a little scary,” says Early. After speaking with residents in that neighborhood, she was the least bit pleased with what she saw and heard. When talking about one resident she spoke with, she says, “She showed me the condition of her home. She showed me bullet holes in her door, how when she locks the door at night, because it’s been kicked in so many times, that she has to lock it with a butter knife.”Neighbors refuse to deal with the center’s move and Early has already decided what she and her family will do, if the land is approved to be purchased. She says, “I personally will be selling my house if they come here.”
