Taxicab permit requirements apply to Ride-Sharing services

By Leah MazzarelliABILENE, Texas – With talk of ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft coming to Abilene, the City of Abilene would like to remind residents of permitting requirements under City ordinance. In Abilene, it is illegal to operate a taxicab or ride-sharing service without the proper permits. An entity wishing to provide taxicab or ride-sharing services must obtain a license from the City of Abilene. The vehicle and driver must also be permitted. “Permits for taxicab and ride-sharing services are required to protect the citizens of Abilene,” said City Manager Robert Hanna. “The permitting process allows us to vet organizations and individuals so we can help ensure our citizens are safe while using taxicab or ride-sharing services.” Permits are provided through the City Secretary’s office.
