Stake & Burger to Honor Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year
Abilene, Texas- The Boys & Girls Club of Abilene will honor the Youth of the Year tonight in the Atrium of the MCM Elegante at 6:30 p.m. Youth of the Year from each Club will be honored with the Youth of Year for the organization, Dashia Layman,speaking. Dashia has grown up in the Fannin Club and has been active in the TeenNight as well.Special guest speaker will be Boys & Girls Club alum, Guinn Smith, of First Financial Bank. Mr. Smith will speak of how the Boys & Girls Club changed his life as he grew up in Vernon, Texas, without a father. “My life was impacted by two men at the Club who made sure I had guidance, encouragement, and helped me make goals for my life. They gave me the positive male role models I needed during those formative years.”CPO Mark Young adds, “Guinn’s story is not unusual for the children we serve. I believe you will see Dashia’s story is similar as she also turned to the Club for a positive male role model since her father wasn’t present in her developmental years.”Entertainment will be provided by kids from each of the Clubs and will include musical and dance performances. Art work will be auctioned off during the night to benefit summer programming.This is the fourth year the Stake & Burger has been sponsored by the Abilene Teachers Federal Credit Union. “We have been so blessed to have the members of the Abilene Teachers Federal Credit Union to give a substantial donation to the Boys & Girls Club of Abilene through Skip A Pay. This year they gave $118,000! We are honored to have them sponsor this event where we pay homage to the best of thebest from our Clubs,” said Board President, Lt. Brad Wilson.The Boys & Girls Club of Abilene had 2250 members in 2010, offers after school programming and summer camps for any child between the ages of 6-18. Four Clubs serve the Abilene community, two on the north side and two on the south side.
