Several Nights After New Year’s

By Jack Walker - Sports Editor

By: Jack Walker, West Texas Tribune: SPORTS EDITOR Twas’ several nights after “New Year’s” and all through the house…Every creature was stirring, including the mouse… The jerseys were worn and the TV was near…In hopes that the playoff was finally here… The fans never rested at all in their beds…‘Cuz visions of only one champion spread… State wore a ‘kerchief’, the Ducks had a cap….Both teams were still dreaming, despite the long nap…. And out on the field arose such a clatter…But it was just TCU, so that didn’t matter… Away to the Web I searched in a flash…The Frogs were no joke and tore up the sash…. The Bears even danced on the new-fallen snow…Gave a serious thought to the story below…. When what to my wondering eyes did appear…Twas’ a thundering herd of eleven rein-deer… With a little old coach, so lively and quick…I knew in a moment he must be Saint Nick… More rapid than water did his mighty Tide roll…He whistled and shouted, but then came the poll… Now, Baylor! Now, State! Now, Seminole Nation! On, Bama! On Oregon, And on Texas Christian! To the top of the polls to the top of wall! Now, Dash Away! Dash Away! Dash Away All! And up to the top of the headlines they flew! With a sleigh full of toys, Ohio State too… Each team had twinkled…With a season so nice But who gets to play without rolling the dice? And then came the answers all covered in soot. A chairman emerged that still won’t dispute. He had a broad face and a little round belly He shook when he laughed like a BOWL full of jelly. He was lost in the mix, but a jolly old elf… I laughed when I saw his set-up, myself…The decisions he made with of twist of his head… Lead us all to believe we had much more to dread…He said not a word but went straight to his work… While all of the fans turned their heads with a jerk….He sprang to his slay, gave committee the whistle… And away they all flew like the down of a thistle…Perhaps there’s a reason the playoff’s unclear Statistics and sponsors fill stockings with fear….And while the debate drifted off, out of sight… Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night…Follow WTT Sports Editor Jack Walker on Twitter @MediaStringer and/or email him at
