RVCC has been providing services for sexual assault victims, adults and children, in Abilene and the surrounding area since 1977. Last year we assisted more than 1300 victims of sexual assault, including 275 local children. We provided prevention programs to nearly 20,000 students and community members. The National Football League announced a five year commitment to survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence and pledged funding for advocacy organizations across the country. The funding will be distributed to the National Domestic Violence Hotline and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center . The funding allocated to NSVRC will support the state coalitions and local advocates that work directly with survivors of sexual assault. • The announcement from the National Football League acknowledges the importance of education around the realities of sexual assault and domestic violence as well as the need to challenge the culture of violence leading up to those incidents.• The intersection of the National Football League, sexual assault, and domestic violence presents an opportunity to discuss the role of objectification and sexism in advertising and media as it relates to the culture of violence against women. • The National Football League recognized the important work and expertise of advocates by its hiring of domestic violence and sexual assault experts to lead policy recommendations, information, and training for all executives, coaches, players and staff. • The National Football League’s response to the issue will expand the reach to address the misinformation around sexual assault that results in harmful victim blaming responses. • Recent media coverage regarding violence against women among NFL players has contributed to an increased volume of calls to local and national sexual assault and domestic violence hotlines. Rape crisis centers across the state of Texas offer confidential sexual assault services free of charge. Diane Dotson Executive Director 325-725-5536Regional Victim Crisis CenterP.O.
