Abilene, TX, August 21, 2013 – The Alliance for Women and Children welcomes the most decorated US Olympic Gymnast, Shannon Miller, to its 11th Annual Fall Luncheon on September 26, 2013 at the Abilene Civic Center. This yearly fundraiser helps support the mission of the Alliance for Women and Children to provide quality programs to empower all women and children by educating and assisting women to be health conscious and self sufficient and providing a nurturing and safe environment for school aged children.Shannon Miller has won an astounding 59 International and 49 National competition medals. Over half of these have been gold. She is the only US gymnast to win 2 World All-Around Titles and she is the first American female to medal in the individual all-around of a non-boycotted Olympics. Her tally of five medals at the 1992 Olympics was the most medals won by a US athlete in any sport. At the ’96 Games, she led the “Magnificent Seven” to the US Women’s first ever Team Gold and for the first time for any American gymnast, she captured Gold on the Balance Beam. {{more}}She is the first American gymnast to win an individual gold medal at a fully-attended Summer Games and cemented her place as the most accomplished gymnast, male or female, in U.S. Olympic history. “We are very excited to bring Shannon Miller to the Alliance’s Fall Luncheon,” says Cyndee Castel, Fall Luncheon Chair and member of the Alliance Board of Directors. “She is a champion for health and wellness for women and children and she is an ovarian cancer survivor – she is the perfect match for our mission.” In January of 2011, Shannon was diagnosed with a malignant germ cell tumor, a form of ovarian cancer. She had the baseball sized tumor removed successfully and followed up with 9 weeks of chemotherapy for this rare germ cell malignancy. She and her husband welcomed their new miracle baby, Sterling, on June 25, 2013. This year, Shannon Miller will not only be speaking at the event, but she will also be participating in a gymnastics clinic partnering with Gymnastics Sports Center. On Wednesday, September 25th at 4:30pm, the Alliance and Gymnastics Sports Center will host a gymnastics clinic from 4:30 – 6:30pm at the Gymnastics Sports Center facility. Shannon Miller will join the clinic for an hour to encourage the children to set goals and to take pictures with the participants. The clinic will cost $25 per child and limited spots are available. This year’s theme is “Setting the Pace” and will celebrate the Alliance After School Care program’s 25th anniversary. “Having Shannon Miller here is such a blessing to the Alliance.
