Mission on the Move Soup Kitchen
The Mission on the Move Soup Kitchen is beginning its 5th year. It was founded by Rev. Iziar Lankford, Minister of the Southwest Drive Community United Methodist Church. He and the 10 volunteers that work with him on a weekly basis feed anywhere from 260 to 370 individuals every Tuesday. There are a couple of unique things about the Soup Kitchen. The first thing is they don’t serve soup, what they serve is a hot meal that anyone would appreciate. The second thing is that they serve you. The individuals are seated and the volunteers actually bring them their plate. If they want seconds someone will bring them another plate. The individuals that are served are the Homeless, the Unemployed, the Under Employed and the Disabled. I asked Rev. Lankford why did he start the program? Rev. Lankford said “I saw a need and I’ve always tried to help people. Where God blesses you, you should bless others.” He said his greatest satisfaction was the Joy of seeing people coming through knowing that they got a hot meal that they would not have received if it were not for the Kitchen. The volunteers also have a passion about their work with the Kitchen. In addition to volunteering their time many of them also give of their resources. One husband and wife team furnished can goods and desserts every week. A member of the church also brings desserts and drinks quite often. Melva King a volunteer said “it’s the best job she ever had and she doesn’t get paid.” Several Churches also make contributions to the Kitchen they are: Mt. Zion 1st Baptist Church, St. James United Methodist and 1st United Methodist Church upper Room Sunday School Class. The “Soup Kitchen” has been a stepping stone for many. A little goes a long way, Lankford said if a person does not have to buy a meal, they may be able to use their money to catch City Link and go on a job interview. Rev. Lankford said that they gave out over 100 Christmas Food Bags this year. If you have an appetite for a bowl of Soup go elsewhere because it is not at the Mission on the Move Soup Kitchen.
