McMurry Music Department to Host Vocal Camp
The Music Department of McMurry University will be hosting a new Vocal Camp from July 7-10. The camp is a further expansion of the Vocal Arts programming that has seen high school singers from the Big Country come for workshops and master classes in the last couple of years. It will run concurrently with the Percussion and Colorguard camps offered on the first of two weeks of music camps. The camp, entitled “Discovering the Belt Voice,” is designed to help young, talented singers who wish to pursue singing in a Broadway or contemporary/commercial vocal style learn how to integrate these techniques in a healthy way. This camp will give singers the opportunity to polish appropriate repertoire for musical theater auditions, give them head shots for their portfolio, and receive instruction in individual studio and group masterclass format. Dr. Erin Hackel, from the University of Colorado, Denver, will be the guest clinician joining the McMurry Vocal Arts team. An Assistant Professor in the Music and Entertainment Industry Studies Department, she specializes in teaching belt voice technique. Dr. Hackel is the founder and director of MIX and Lark, competitive a cappella groups that are receiving top prizes and awards for newly released albums. Dr. Elizabeth Moss, Assistant Professor of Music, will be teaching voice lessons and classes in stage diction. Dr. David Wallis, Associate Professor of Music, will be coaching and doing ensemble numbers for the Exhibition Performance. The camp will conclude with a performance by camp participants, and will be free and open to the public. The performance will be Friday, July 10, at 12 noon in the Recital Hall of the Ryan Fine Arts Center. For more information, please contact Dr. David Wallis at 325-793-4947.
