Made in America

Made in America

I met Robert and Holly Hoemke for the first time a few days ago and I could have written a nice Valentine Story about them. I could tell that this couple who married in 1983 and work together in their business appreciate each other and love each other’s company. However, my assignment was to write about a successful business that has, Made in America, stamped all over it. This is very unique when you consider that most manufacturing jobs have been out sourced to other countries. {{more}} Airtite Products LLC, manufactures their products, here in Abilene at 4008 South Treadaway. They are best known for the high quality windows they manufacture but they will start manufacturing, high quality doors, soon.Airtite Products LLC has been manufacturing windows since 1975 and Robert went to work for the company when he was 14. Robert said that he actually had two jobs one was working for Safeway and the other was working for Safeway. When Safeway closed he needed a way to make more income. It was in 1984 that his boss sold him the business. A part of the deal was that he would have to raise the money, in one month, to pay for it. He said that he raised most of it and his grandmother helped him with the balance. Their business has grown over the years. They now sell to contractors, other suppliers, the government and to local home owners who want to enhance the beauty of their home and make it more energy efficient. They have at least 20 individuals working for them on a permanent basis. In speaking about their employees, Holly said “we feel blessed; we love them, they are family.” One employee is family and that’s their son-in-law Mariusz Przybysz who is married to their daughter Tiffany. Robert and Holly are glad that he decided to work in the business with them.I asked Robert if he had a philosophy when it comes to running his business, he said “Whatever you do take pride in it even if it’s picking up trash.” He said in his business “I am always looking for products that will stand the test of time.”Robert graduated from Cooper and Holly from Abilene High. They went straight into their work and soon, thereafter, started their business. With much determination and hard work they have built something that they are proud of and something that the Abilene community can take pride in.They have hobbies, they both, love their Basset hounds that they rescued. Holly spends time practicing Yoga at least every other day and she is also involved in martial arts. Robert enjoys restoring Historical European Cars from the 50’s and 60’s. He is currently working on a 1960 Austin Healy.
