Local, Non-Franchised Gym Now Open

FirehouseFitness at 3518 S. 7th officially opened on March 31st. The building wasoriginally built in the 1950’s as a fire station. In the 1970’s it became theAdult Daycare Center of Abilene. After sitting vacant for over a year Timothyand Pam Smith, nearby residents of the building, decided to renovate and turnit into a local, 24- hour access, neighborhood gym. Smith explained he wantedto move away from the typical “chain” type gym and create somethingtruly unique and local. “We have created a fitness center like no other intown and we are already looking to add a juice bar/ healthy lunch menu and anoutdoor exercise area along Elm Creek on the backside of the building,”Smith explained. Smith also said he has received a positive response from theElmwood neighborhood and many of the nearby residents have already come in andjoined. {{more}} Firehouse Fitnesscurrently offers brand new cardio, free-weight, and circuit equipment. Theyalso offer Zumba classes five days a week and will be adding other groupfitness classes as the membership builds. They also have five certifiedpersonal trainers for those interested in the benefits of one-on-one training.Smith said he hopes to encourage everyone who joins to make positive lifestylechanges in regard to nutrition and exercise. He said the greatest reward so farhas been seeing people get real results in reaching their weight loss goals.One of Smith’s best tips for starting and maintaining an exercise program is tofind a friend to get started with and hold each other accountable. Smith said,”There are many benefits to having a workout partner. You will always domore and push harder if you are working out with another person. You will alsobe more likely to show up if you know someone else is counting on you to bethere.”
