Letter to the Editor

By Joe Starkey | July 1, 2012

My name is Lydia Long, and I am campaigning for Taylor County Justice of the Peace, Pct. 1, Place 1. I want your vote in the July 31st Republican Run-off. If you are not familiar with the Justice of the Peace office, the JP is elected to a four-year term. The Justice of the Peace has criminal jurisdiction over Class C misdemeanors . In Taylor County the Justice of the Peace also acts as Coroner and holds inquests . The Justice of the Peace sits as the Judge of both the Justice Court and the much less formal Small Claims Court. And finally, they marry people. {{more}}Our justice system is based on the separation of powers. The three branches of our government legislative , executive and judicial form our system of checks and balances. If the public perceives that there is no longer a system of checks and balances, they lose trust in our system. My education and training will help me serve the Citizens of Taylor County in a fair, impartial and professional manner. I have a doctorate in Criminal Justice Administration from Sam Houston State University. I have research experience with the Department of Justice and the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards. I also have additional training in Child Abuse, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Child Homicide and Coroners classes. I believe the JP court should be accessible to ALL citizens and they should feel they will get a fair and impartial hearing. I believe it is my obligation to make the office as professional and unbiased as possible for citizens. I want the JP courtrooms to become more accessible to the average citizen, via online access of forms and information, and after business hours to allow citizens to come to Court after work. ALL forms and information should be readily available for all Taylor County Citizens. I want the Taylor County Justice of the Peace Court to be a true ‘people’s court’ where every citizen feels they can come and be heard, impartially. On a personal note, I was raised in a military family, and four generations of my family live in Abilene. I have been married for 20 years to Taylor County Deputy, Bob Bailey; and we have 2 children; a daughter, who is a student at Cisco College, and a son, in the U.S. Air Force. We have two grandchildren. I want your vote because I am the most qualified candidate and will work hard for the citizens of Taylor County. Please visit www.facebook.com/LydiaLongforJP for more information. Early Voting starts July 23rd. Your vote can insure Taylor County has a fair and impartial Justice of the Peace who works for you, the citizen.
