Leon Petty honored at recent Chamber of Commerce Ceremony

By Floyd Miller Leon Petty, owner of Leon Petty Insurance, was honored with the longevity award which was presented by the Abilene Black Chamber of Commerce. Petty has been a member of the Chamber for 40 plus years and a majority of that time has been as a board member. In accepting the award, Petty thanked the Chamber for honoring him. He also encouraged members to become certified to do business with the state. Petty stated that the state does very little business with minorities, and that needs to improve. Dokpe Ogunsanya, MPA, MS, was the keynote speaker for the event. She told the story of her life and asked those in attendance to apply the strategies she used to overcome challenging situations. Dokpe stressed the importance of faith, in our everyday lives and that by trusting our instincts, and embracing discipline we can achieve the goals we desire. Dokpe, who is from Nigeria, had this to say about America “America is one of the greatest places to live in the world. It is probably the only country where the citizens are the architects of their own destiny…no excuse; your destiny is definitely in your hands! You have the opportunity not only to design but also write the script of your life…you pick the character you want to be!”
