Sunrise March 17th, 1936 Sunset August 6th 2013Joseph Miller Metcalfe was the youngest child of Sherman and Estelle Metcalfe born in Abilene, TX on March 17,1936. His parents, sister Dorothy Metcalfe, and brother Sherman Metcalfe Jr. preceded him in death. In Joe’s formative years, he attended Carter G. Woodson Jr. and Sr. schools. He was a member of the 10th & Treadway Church of Christ where his father was a preacher. This is where Joe developed a beautiful voice and his love for the Lord. Later he would leave home to attend the Negro Christian Institute of Nashville to follow in his father’s footsteps. He eventually left Texas to join the Air Force and serve his duty in Korea from 1954 to 1957. This is where he met and married Rochelle Metcalfe and go on to have one son Jay Metcalfe. They lived in San Francisco, CA for some time. He eventually divorced and years later met and married Deleign Metcalfe and had two children De Jada and DeLana Metcalfe. He embraced Deleign’s son Hermon as his son and raised him accordingly. {{more}}For many years he lived in the San Francisco Bay Area. He eventually moved to Los Angeles, CA. and then on to New Mexico to work and finallyback to Abilene, Texas to rest.Joe was a renaissance man who had many hobbies such as jewelry making and photography. He loved music and was boundless always learning, and never afraid to take a chance. He retired from Excel Corporation and in his later years took up real estate and appraisal services.He will be loved and missed by many. His words “It’s not the man, it’s the plan” will never be forgotten.Joseph Miller Metcalfe is survived by his children Jay Metcalfe, DeJada Simpson, Delana Picou and Herman Metcalfe, Justin Metcalfe. His grandchildren, Kellen Simpson, Kennedy Simpson, LeVale Simpson, Christopher Simpson, Kayla Picou, Jaylin Picou, Mylin Mason, Tishira Metcalfe, Hermon Metcalfe Jr., Kvana Metcalfe, Nephew Phillip Wiseman, Nieces Peggy Shinn, Paula Walker, Cheryl Metcalfe, and a host of family and friends.Interment September 10, 2013 11:00 a.m. Veterans Cemetery 7457 W Lake Road Abilene, Texas 79601Arrangements entrusted to Dove Funeral Home 2500 North 1st Street.
