HSU’s Abilene Summer Music Festival to Challenge Orchestra Camp Musicians

All performances are free!The 2010 edition of the Abilene Summer Music Festival gets underway June 14-19, 2010, as top junior high and high school musicians take performance to a higher level under the guidance of several Hardin-Simmons University professors.This is the 10th year for the festival with an impressive list of university orchestral professors and high school teachers from across the United States.The location of the festival has been changed this year due to a heavy schedule of camps on the HSU campus this summer. While it has been moved temporarily to Cisco College in Cisco, it will return to the Hardin-Simmons University facilities next year.{{more}}The festival is dedicated to enriching the lives of West Texans by bringing quality chamber and orchestra concerts to the Abilene and Big Country communities. The goal is to provide educational opportunities to young musicians through advanced instruction in a supportive environment.The 2010 festival spotlights students from Kansas, Oklahoma, Houston, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Austin, Wichita Falls, and Midland/Odessa, as well as many talented performers from Abilene. The curriculum features three symphony orchestras, chamber music, composition, conducting, world music ensemble, music history, music theory, technique class, performance class, master class, camper mixer, recreation, and a grand finale concert at the Abilene Civic Center. The grand finale, scheduled for 3 p.m., June 19, is one of four performance opportunities that are free and open to the public.
