HSU to present musical Once Upon a Mattress as Spring Dinner Theatre

Hardin-Simmons University Department of Theatre’s kicks off their spring semester with a dinner theatre production of the musical Once Upon A Mattress, Music by Mary Rodgers, Lyrics by Marshall Barer and Book by Jay Thompson, Marshall Barer and Dean Fuller, February 25th-27th and March 4th-8th in the Van Ellis Theatre.If you thought you knew the story of “The Princess and The Pea,” you may be in for a walloping surprise! Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken’s love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste? Or that, in fact, it wasn’t the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you’ll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again! The production, directed by Melissa Green and assistant directed by Jared Strange will feature musical direction by Dr. Jaynne Middleton, will also feature dinner before each evening performance.Once Upon A Mattress will run February 25th-27th and March 4th-6th & 8th at 8 p.m. with a matinee March 7th at 2 p.m. in Van Ellis Theatre. Once Upon A Mattress will be HSU’s entry into the Christian University Theatre Festival to be held March 8th-10th on the HSU campus and will perform at 8 p.m. on March 8th as part of that festival. Dinner will be served at all the evening performances beginning at 6:45 p.m. in Moody Center on the HSU Campus. Dinner includes Chicken Monterrey served with a mustard dipping sauce and garden rice pilaf and green peas on the side. Tossed salad and rolls with coffee, tea and water to drink. Strawberry Shortcake for dessert. Dinner prices are $16 for adults, $14 for seniors, students and military, $12 for HSU faculty, staff and students. For those not interested in dining, ticket prices are $8 for adults, $5 for students, seniors, military, and $3 for HSU faculty, staff and students. All dinner theatre reservations must be made 48 hours in advance.
