Students from Hardin-Simmons University’s Department of Communication received a whooping 22 ADDY Awards from the American Advertising Federation, Abilene chapter, this past week. {{more}} Eight of the awards were for an anti-drinking campaign called “Who’s That Guy,” for the Century Council, targeting youth and young adults. The campaign features the very unglamorous side effects of drinking alcohol. The awards dinner is the annual culmination of advertising entered, by both professionals and students, for judging. The awards were judged this year by a group of professionals from the Dallas area. HSU student Kristen Harris, a gold winner the past two years, won another gold medal this year with her television spot for the Century Council. Harris also picked up three bronze awards for her work with Logsdon Seminary, the Century Council, and Hendrick Home for Children. Also winning gold for advertising is Jennifer Childers, who is now employed as the art director with Core Advertising in Dallas. Childers won gold medals for two packaging designs for the Allen Americans semi-pro hockey team. She also picked up a silver medal for her campaign on the HSU Communication Department, and a bronze for packaging and magazine design. Another big winner was Becca Tomko, winning three gold awards and a silver. Gold awards included the anti-drinking advertising campaign for the Century Council print ads, the council’s overall anti-drinking advertising campaign, and the logo design for the campaign. Tomko also won silver for a poster design. Other students winning for HSU included Jill Singletary with a silver medal for animation, Wan Tan with gold and silver for her work in video and print, and Nicole Dodder with her outdoor campaign for Antigua Furniture. HSU also walked away with the Best of Show going to student Becca Tomko for a “Who’s That Guy” magazine campaign. HSU students also grabbed the Judges Award for packaging design, that going to Jennifer Childers. The gold student ADDY winners will automatically advance to the AAF District 10 competition. The winners there will be announced at the AAF 10th annual convention in Amarillo on Friday, April 16, 2010. For the fourth year HSU will be sending a student team to the convention to compete in the National Student Advertising Competition. This year’s client for the NSAC is State Farm Insurance.
