Health Matters Summer Camps

The West Texas Area Health Education Center – Big Country Region is offering three summer camp opportunities to high school students in the region who are interested in a future career in the health care industry. The Health Careers Summer Camp will take place in Abilene, June 10th through the 13th. Students will stay at the McMurry University dormitories and will tour local hospitals and health clinics including specialized programs at the locations. We will also tour pre-health programs at local universities and colleges, including a day trip to the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Ft. Worth. In addition, we will be hosting two nursing day camp opportunities on June 9th or June 19th for those students who are interested in the field of nursing. Students who would like a full range of health career experiences are encouraged to apply for both the June 9th Nursing Day Camp and the four day Health Matters Summer camp, June 10th – June 13th . Prospective campers must turn in an application and teacher recommendations by April 30th.{{more}} Applications may be obtained online on our Facebook pages or as well as by contacting Big Country AHEC. The Health Matters Summer Camps are made possible with the support of our friends at the Hodges Family Foundation.Each of these opportunities is made possible through partnerships with communities, community health professionals, health professions training schools and AHEC.AHEC’s mission is to address the health care provider shortage and improve health care access in the North and West Central Texas through education and development of the health care workforce. Goals include introducing school aged youth to health careers, providing rural clinical training for students in the health professions, supporting existing healthcare professionals via continuing education and promoting healthy living.
