With the summer just officially kicking off and thefamily BBQ’s in full force, we wanted to take the time to encourage you tocontinue being thoughtful concerning the overall health of our environment. Somany times with the brisket cooking, and the sweet aromas of deliciouspastries, we easily loose sight of the big picture; not just family gatheringsor reunions, not just food or time cooking with one another, but theenvironment in which we are surrounded by and living within. The purpose of this article is to share somehelpful points on how to have a Waste Free BBQ this summer. Make this a summerthat teaches the family that food and fellowship are important but also beingconscious about our environment in which we all have to live in, in some regards,is even more important. {{more}} As the Steward of Presidency of Choose LifeRecycling, a Christ centered non-profit recycling company that specializes inelectronics in West Texas, I strive to share the message of recycling witheveryone by connecting values of faith in Christ with the idea of recycling. Weare so blessed as a people in our western civilization when it comes to food, shelter, careers, family and money, that we sometimes become desensitized toour responsibility to each other. God has called us to be stewards over thethings which he has given to us. A steward is a man or a woman that can befound faithful over the things which they are given . Whenwe have the mindset that we are stewards over our families, possessions and evenour waste, it changes our perspectives on life. Things to ponder when thinking of the perfect BBQ: 1) Canwe as a family eliminate or reduce the amount of paper waste for our BBQ?Instead of buying the paper plates, paper cups, and paper napkins, how aboutusing dishware from the kitchen and cloth napkins instead. This idea saves youmoney overtime by purchasing these items one time for reuse purposes andsignificantly reduces the amount of trash after the BBQ going to the landfills.Try shopping at your local 2nd hand stores or dollar stores for thebest deals on inexpensive dishware. 2) Howcan we decorate for the BBQ and protect the environment at the same time?Instead of buying tablecloths and expensive lawn chairs and tables, how aboutusing old or unwanted bed sheets and tables and chairs you already have in yourpossession. Wouldn’t it be neat to have a “Bed Sheet” themed BBQ for yourfamilies summer get together? Doing this would ensure that you pocket the moneyfor unnecessary table cloths, that when soiled anyway, you will never use againor toss it away and this helps to teach your family to use items that God hasalready blessed you with to entertain others. 3) Howcan we reduce the waste of condiment containers for our BBQ? Instead of buyingyour family favorite condiments and sauces, how about making your own inreusable containers. After you have depleted that ketchup container or picklerelish jar, you are left with unnecessary waste. If you were to gather yourfamily together a day or two before the BBQ and make your own condiments, youare not only teaching your family valuable lessons about being resourceful, butyou will be able to create quality time, by the way, which should be the mainpurpose for having your BBQ in the first place.  The idea of recycling is truly a “green” ideanot just for the environment but also for your pockets. Think about it, themore resources we have to use the less we would have to pay for those sameresources because they will be in abundance and not in lack. The Bible saysthat the Earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof so if welavish from all that the Earth gives us, we should be so thankful enough topreserve it by replenishing it.
