Hardin-Simmons University is one of three universities in Texas acting as a host site for the Global Leadership Summit taking place August 11-12.The event will bring together world-class entrepreneurs, best-selling authors, as well as Christian leaders for the event to be transmitted live via satellite to more than 200 sites across the United States and will be videocast this fall to approximately 300 other sites across the world.{{more}}The Global Leadership Summit is an annual concentration of leaders, originating at Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Ill. The two-day event offers participants live interaction with both internationally known speakers and local leaders. James Stone, director of church relations for HSU, says the event is an opportunity to learn to lead where you are. Stone explains that the summit is meant for even those who may not even feel they are leaders. “It’s about learning how to maximize your influence, learning how to lead the people around you to a better place—leading within your sphere, so to speak.”In addition to Hardin-Simmons, other university sites include Baylor University and East Texas Baptist University. The interactive leadership summit will have a total of 19 host sites in Texas with an anticipated 165,000 business, church, and community leaders attending nationwide. One of the faculty members leading the summit is Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz. Schultz’s business philosophy is anchored in a core belief that it’s not about winning, but winning the right way. Schultz will speak to the highs, lows, and key turning points that helped Starbucks regain command of the neighborhood shops that sell coffee based on a community gathering place for people to connect.Another speaker is the woman known as the Mother Teresa of Cairo. Mama Maggie Gobran will speak about her calling from God to help some of the most destitute people on earth. Gobran left a secure life at the American University in Cairo to found a Christian children’s ministry in an area of the world not widely open to Christianity. Speaker Erwin McManus, filmmaker and leader of a multi-campus church, says of the role of a leader, “A leader is a curator of human talent. They need to know how to cultivate, how to identify, and how to nurture and develop the God-given potential in every person.”Stone says serving as a site for The Global Leadership Summit is a good fit for HSU as the university strives to develop leadership in students. “Resourcing, equipping, and inspiring people for greater capacity and leadership is part of what a university does and is a natural fit.”There are a number of local businesses and churches who have already signed up to be represented at the conference. Stone points out that it is a good opportunity for community leaders to come together in one place here in the Big Country. The Summit experience is planned to be identical whether at the originating campus or a satellite location like HSU. The cost of the conference ranges in price from $75 to $269.
