Neighborhood families and members of the HSU staff and faculty will gather at Hardin-Simmons University for fellowship, food, and school supplies as the HSU North Park Friendship House holds its annual back-to-school pool party this Saturday.Neighborhood Enhancement Program coordinator Danyel Rogers says as many as 120 neighbors are expected as bags of school supplies are passed out to children headed back to public schools this month.Rogers says last year, about 50 grocery bags full of school supplies were given to the neighborhood children. HSU faculty and staff have been donating the back-to-school goodies each year since the Friendship House was established in 2005.{{more}}With two more days to donate supplies, Rogers says she is still looking for crayons, markers, paper, pens, pencils, scissors, glue, folders, and rulers. Rogers says you can drop off supplies at the Friendship House located two blocks north of HSU at 2701 Hickory, or drop them by the Connally Missions Center on the HSU campus as late as Thursday. As Neighborhood Enhancement activities move into the new school year, service opportunities are available for HSU students, staff, and faculty. Among the programs offered at the Friendship House are children’s after-school programs, youth after-school programs, Mom and Tots parenting classes, Reading Hour, and neighborhood adult luncheons. If you’d like to serve in the neighborhood, contact Danyel Rogers at 670-1257 or 734-6824.The pool party will be at the HSU pool this Saturday, August 14, 2010, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
