First National Bank of Baird Celebrates 125 Years

By Joe Starkey

This birthday was celebrated with cookies, punch and ribbon cutting attended by the Abilene Red Coats. The First National Bank of Baird started as a small community bank in Baird in 1885 and has continued that tradition of small town personal service as they opened branches in Brownwood, Clyde and will open their third Abilene branch later this fall. Mr. Sammy Edington, Co-Chairman of the bank gave this reporter a gracious amount of time to ask questions about the bank. They started out mostly in agri-business lending and are now one of the stronger Small Business Administration lenders in the area.{{more}}He feels the new laws will enable community banks to do better as they take up the slack in community banking needs created by big bank failures. I was there for about an hour and watched friendly staff talk with and serve people that they both knew by name and were interested in helping. Prompt, courteous, knowledgeable and friendly is my impression of this bank.
