City’s Animal Services receives state awards

ABILENE, Texas – The Texas Animal Control Association awarded the City of Abilene’s Animal Services Division with two awards, the Media Award and the James Vyers Field Officer Award, during their 2011 conference and awards presentation. Receiving the James Vyers Field Officer Award is Animal Control Officer Samantha Freeman. Freeman has been with the City of Abilene six years and serves as a member of the Dangerous Dog Investigator Team, is certified as a Texas Human Law Enforcement Officer and is also the volunteer coordinator for the City of Abilene Animal Services. This award is presented each year to an outstanding animal control officer who has performed duties above and beyond what is normally required and has consistently performed at a professional level, representing their agency in a professional manner at all times.{{more}}“Samantha has dedicated herself to helping the animals and citizens of our community,” said Aaron Vannoy, Animal Services Manager. “She works long hours in the field but also makes time to volunteer at pet adoption events, helping place animals in forever homes.”The public services announcement “Stand Like a Tree”, created by the City’s Communications and Media Relations Manager Callie Harris and Communications Specialist Rick Tomlin, received the 2011 Media Award. The PSA was broadcast locally and educates children to stand like a tree when approached by an unfamiliar dog to prevent bites. The Media Award is presented each year to an individual or organization that presents animal control and welfare in a positive manner, promotes responsible pet ownership and depicts animal care and control in a professional and positive light.These awards will be presented by Mayor Norm Archibald at the Thursday, November 17 City Council meeting held on the second floor of City Hall located at 555 Walnut St. The meeting begins at 8:30 a.m.To view the “Stand Like a Tree” PSA visit the City of Abilene’s YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/AbileneTelevision.
