Celebration Singers Present 15th Annual Spring Concert May 17 On-Stage at Abilene’s Paramount Theatre

Free Show Highlights Guest Artist, Broadway & Hollywood Music, Patriotic Favorites ABILENE – Celebration Singers, the Big Country’s premiere show choir, will present its 15th Annual Spring Concert at the Paramount Theatre on Tuesday evening, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. Admission to the concert is free and open to the public with a complementary ticket available at the door, from choir members, many local churches, and nine public/private sponsors of the event. “From Broadway to Hollywood,” the theme of our annual Spring concert on May 17, will feature a wide-ranging repertoire of classic Broadway show tunes and Hollywood favorites, as well as a special focus on patriotic and inspirational music,” said Bill Hughes, president of Celebration Singers. “Dr. Lynnette Chambers of Hardin-Simmons University will be our featured soloist,” he said. “Prof. Chambers is a senior member of the University’s Music Faculty, and she is a local favorite with Abilene-area audiences. “Overall, this is concert is a highlight of the year for us. It is our group’s annual rite-of-spring gift to the community, and we have been rehearsing diligently since late January to help make this a special evening for our Abilene-area friends and neighbors,” said Mr. Hughes.{{more}} The 2011 show features the full 45-member choir, as well as small group ensembles in costumes and attire to fit the concert’s theme. Music to be performed during the evening is by well-known American composers Rodgers & Hammerstein, George & Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Stephen Sondheim & Jule Styne, John Kander & Fred Ebb, Johnny Mercer, and Sammy Kahn. Patriotic classics on the program will be “This is My Country,” “God Bless America,” “America the Beautiful,” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Mr. Hughes also noted the concert will include a medley of favorite American cities – “New York, New York,” “Walking to New Orleans,” “My Kind of Town ,” and “Hooray for Hollywood” “This great medley, published in 2009 by Music Arranger Greg Gilpin, is a ‘new favorite,’ popular with all ages across the country,” he said. Ms. Betty Ann Blackburn directs the choir, with Dr. Larry McGraw as Master of Ceremonies to introduce the musical numbers and entertain the audience. Although admission is free, cash contributions will be accepted at the close of the show to help support the choir’s production costs, theatre rental, and music-use rights. Celebration Singers, Inc., is a community-based show choir incorporated under IRS tax code 501 as a non-profit organization. First Financial Bank is the principal underwriter of the choir’s spring concert, with SuddenLink Communications, Buffalo Gap News, and Midway Plumbing as major sponsors. Additional support is provided by the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council, the Abilene Arts Alliance, the City of Abilene, and the Texas Commission on the Arts. In-kind contributions are provided by Crossway Baptist Church, and International Baptist Church.
