What do you feel is your greatest accomplishment as a public servant?Serving othersWhat do you feel like is the greatest challenge facing the Abilene Independent School District, and what would you do to solve it?Funding-I will be an advocate for finding new or better resources to help fund public school.{{more}}Sometimes the citizens have a cynical attitude when it comes to elected officials. The attitude is a we versus them attitude. What are you doing or what will you do to foster an environment where every citizen feels important in AISD?I will be a cheerleader for public school and continue to be transparent and inclusive though open and clear communications with our parents, staff and students. How do you believe the citizens of Abilene can help make things better for the students of AISD?Citizens of Abilene want students to be successful. Therefore, in helping AISD school board members outline a vision statement that is community driven, the students will know how important education is to their success.What makes you uniquely qualified to serve on the School Board?I have been a supporter of AISD through serving on various committees and task forces. I have offered my services to AISD for over 20 years. It has been my privilege to volunteer and, hopefully, I have been helpful in my efforts. *According to a poll conducted by The Associated Press – NORC Center for Public Affairs research, they found that more than 8 in 10 Americans favor a federal law preventing mentally ill people from purchasing guns, along with a federal law expanding background check requirements to include gun shows and private sales. How would you feel, if that was implemented in Abilene and Taylor County?My experience have taught me that community driven ideas in most cases dictate new legislation. I am open to any discussion on this topic. It appears that we will probably have a large number of young voters engaged in the political process, because of the 17 individuals killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland FL. Do you agree or disagree with their activism and why? Do you have a message for them?I agree with any activism that leads to a better quality of life for our community. My message to any group is that I will support your rights to advocate for positive change. Do you believe that a person’s character is important in holding elected office? If you do please list one character trait one should have and state why you believe it’s important?Yes, Honesty; Without honesty, you are nothing. You don’t stand for anything without honesty.We have seen campaigns where individuals have been extremely mean to each other. Could you pay your opponent one compliment?I don’t know my opponent. I applaud him for running for office.If you could have dinner with anyone from the past or currently living, who would it be and why?I have lived a wonderful life because so many individuals wanted me to succeed. My dinner would include a round table of all the beautiful, wonderful people who made me what I am today, through their sacrifice. Tell us a little about your family, hobbies, etc.My wife, Tina, is a seasoned school teacher. My son, Rick, is an X-Ray technician with a local clinic. My daughter, Heather, is a degreed nurse pursuing her masters to become a nurse practitioner. I have 5 grandchildren, 3 who currently attend Abilene ISD. My hobbies include spending time with my family and serving my community.
