Art Walk March 2015

Art Walk March 2015

By: Joe StarkeySecond Thursday from 5-8 PM is always a good time to be downtown. It’s ARTWALK!! and this month they added a car show. From fully restored like they were ready to drive off the dealer lot to reconstructed into someone’s concept of a dream car – they were a great show for the whole family. The 12th Armored Division Museum had two of their display vehicles running and on display for the show.Inside the Grace Museum were the Juried results of the Youth Art Month with displays from most of the area schools. Large crowd of proud students were showing off their work and that of friends to parents and relatives. There was also an installation on the bottom floor that gives the impression of a sky. I found a young girl dancing around the pillars in the room as if she were in a pleasant meadow dancing for the sky.The Contemporary Arts Center had three notable shows. The Texas Photographic Society had their annual Juried Competition in the Photography room with some really nice work including one by Abilenean John English. They also had their annual Dirty Drawers show featuring art by a local group that meets each month at the center to draw from life models. Despite the name, the show is very modest. They also have a show by Cara Hines entitled “Oops”. It was not really in the range of art that I enjoy but is interesting for the way she creates. Her artist statement says it is created in the form of a self-actualized ritual. This process lets her let go of control and the pain that goes with attempting to hold that control. Some are created in part or whole with her eyes closed with her non-dominant hand without concern for what she is creating. Go to the CAC and read her artist’s statement and see the art for yourself. The Cockerell Galley had studios with open houses. I found a list of rules in the TM Gand studio that I think work well for artists. A shameless plug for my Daughter and Sister who will have a space in front next month selling Native American Flutes and prickly pear jelly respectively. The jelly won first place at the last fair here.
