Photos by Joe StarkeyTwo teams with perfect season records stepped onto the field at Shotwell Stadium to contest the State Quarterfinals. One would go on to play in the State Championship. One would go home and turn in their equipment for the year.The game really turned on the first set of downs.{{more}} After allowing first downs, Albany stiffened and forced a punt. They blocked the punt and returned the ball to the six yard line. A quick pass and they were ahead 6-0. Good PAT and it was 7-0. That would break the heart and spirit of many teams but Hamlin took the kickoff and marched the length of the field to score. A bad kick forced by pressure from the Lions and it was 7-6 Albany.Albany went into the second quarter and scored two touchdowns before Hamlin got back in gear. A pass to #20 Cedar McIlwain for a TD and a two point conversion pass to #4 Mathew Fields brought Hamlin back to a one TD game. Hamlin’s score to tie the game was answered by Albany’s #11 Charles Carter with a rushing TD. Hamlin answered with a TD to finish the first half 28 all.Third quarter belonged to Albany as #3 Steve Phillips caught a pass for a TD and quarterback #5 made two long runs for touchdowns to lead 49-28. Fourth quarter saw the teams trading yards in the middle of the field until Hamlin’s #12 Caymon Georges made a 14 Yd run to make the score 49-35. An intercepted pass by Albany finished Hamlin’s last chance to score.Albany went on to defeat Seagraves 21-14 in the semi final game but lost 21-28 in the State Championship to the number one ranked team in Texas Bremond.
